It was after it got dark, these guys came to visit our table.

The idea to go to Slovenia came up as a result of watching “Nervous Water” several times. I couldn’t believe that there is such beautiful place in Europe, just two hours away.

So our next holiday was planned, and on 23 of September we have landed in Vienne.

4 hours drive through Bled and Bohinska Bistrica and we arrive at Kobarid.

Our camp is right on the banks of Soca, and it looks like no other river I have ever seen.

The next morning our guide Sebastian met us and we went to see some places in the area.

Out of that day we have had around ten spots to fish at and the flies.

The flies that have worked are no.16 and smaller, no.16 Zak nymph, no.18 Goldhead PTN and the most deadly are light grey flies on the no 16 scud hooks and very small GRHE. We fished mostly on 3 rivers: Soca, Baca and Tolminka.

Tolminka is a beautiful river with that magic blue water, bigger flies have worked here, but the upper parts were marble trout is more abundant we did not visit.

Baca is a very small river, very clear with lots of fish present. Flies no.18 and smaller worked the best here, dry flies work everywhere. I fished size 16 and 18 klinkhamers in natural and olive; the little grey F fly worked very well sizes 18 and 20.

I really liked this small river.

Soca was a real challenge for me several attempts, brought no fish at all, though I have seen some real trophy fish.

The last two days I was fishing Kamno bridge and I have had several bites.

The last day I have arrived early in the morning, I took my 9wt. with.

I wanted to try those Jig Flies that many local fisherman use. On My second cast I got a very powerful bite and a good size Rainbow was landed.

A couple of smaller fish on 5wt and nymph setup and the last thing in this trip was a nice grayling caught on no.16 GRHE pattern.

It was a really good feeling, breaking the code of Soca River.

A good school and I will certainly be back…

Another Saturday out to Jordan River.

So again we are at the faster part of Jordan, we now have Daniel who decided not to fish, but take photographs instead.
The weather got pretty fresh early in the morning. A cup of hot coffee with cardamon, and we are ready to go.
We fished the fast stream with Czech method.
The bites came immediately, mostly taking the top brassie on 14 and 16 hook.
This is a first time I had lots of bites on heavy bigger nymph, Czech and Polish no 8 and 10.
6X tippet got snapped a couple of times, so I swapped it to 5X.
A t around 10:00 am the bites just stopped, it got very hot by then.
So we had our traditional cup of tea with fresh mint and we are on the way home.

I was invited to see a new commercial fishery. Couple of casts and a good size tilapia taken on Copper John. Another one taken later. Other guys were float fishing with good results.

Jordan River, the faster part.

So we decided to visit some faster places for the first time this year.

We arrived just before the sunrise, so we decided to have a cup of coffee before we start.

Some fresh Costa Rica coffee gave us some energy to start with.

We started at the slower section, two of us were fishing fly, and Danny, Slava's son, was fishing lures, his fly rod is not finished yet.

I immediately catch two small scale barbel (Damascus Barbel) on Zak nymph.

Danny has managed a good size catfish, we didn't even think lives in such rapid water.

Later I have moved to faster water catching good size barbel one after another.

It was a great experience, the fish is very powerful.

Although the water was not clear at all the fish was taken only my smallest flies, a variation of Brassy size 16, with CDC I have learned from Murray at FFU. Size 16 green flashback nymph, size 14 prince.

Not even a bite on heavier nymphs disregarding the type and color.

It was a great day out, we take some mint at the banks of the river and make tea.

We are on the way back.

A little late, but...

With short notice I am on my way to business trip in central California.

Most guides I have contacted said this is not the best season for river fishing, that after snowy winter all rivers are still unfishable. Only Tim Hutchins from Yosemite said that small stream fishing is very good now in the area.

I long wanted to try some wild small stream fishing and so on the second day in California I'm on my way from San Francisco to Yosemite.

Nice walk through the park and we get to a very small pretty stream. We follow it on the way down for some time and then starting to fish upstream until our start point.

My first cast with Tim's signature stonefly dry fly, and lighting fast strikes, resulting in fish hooking itself.

The fish is small, but not too spooky and very fast. Later I'm starting to find the fish myself and striking on bites (instead of missing them)

The trout is just beautiful, looking perfectly camouflaged on the stream bed.

Somewhere at the afternoon we hook a nice Arctic Char, later on we catch another one.

It was a beautiful place, with one great fishing. The fish has never seen a fly.

Tim is a very good guide,helping a lot. Besides the fish, he thought me many useful skills for such places.

I will definitely do some more small stream fishing.

I was really trying hard to implement all my South African knowledge.
Only Streamer and nymph variation has worked.
But there is still a whole season ahead, will try some more.
But this season 2 new fly fisherman have got their first fishes...

The rod is fairly light ~119gr, has new concept rings positioning.
The rod is very fast but sensitive, can be used for UL lures easily and up to 20 gr will work well.

A quick Mozambique, Inhaca

This time in  South Africa, we have planned to visit Mozambique.
After a  weekend with the family, we pack our bags, take the rods and start driving.
On the way we get the malaria tablets, repellent and a bottle of "Havana CluB"
Long waiting at the borders, but everything goes pretty smooth.
We finally get to Maputo, but the only flight for today is gone.
We decide to drive through Maputo and find a Hotel for a night.
We decide to stop at Blue Anchor Inn just 20km north to Maputo.
Very friendly people, with good food and service.
We get a very good night rest and at 11:45 we catch the plain to Inhaca isaland.
On the first afternoon we decide to take a kayak for a ride.The place is amazinly beautifull, with lots of coconut trees and mangroves.
It has some lovely shallow beaches and lagoons.
There are no asfalt roads on the island, all roads are sandy, and so it will be unpossible to walk around.

In front of the lodge plenty small jacks at high tide, those can be easily caught on clousers or small lures from the jetty.

On the next day we visited Portugese island, wich is about 5 mins by boat from the hotel.

On the westers side the drop is just by the beach and some great fishing opportunities.
We were catching small queenfish on nearly every cast.
Lots of small jacks, though I have seen bigger group passing by.
Plenty garfish, I got one giant on Acme KM, and it was very nice jumping all around.

The other two days we spent on Santa Maria beach just by the Hells Gate.
I will tell you, that it is the most beautifull beach I have ever been at.
There is sandy shallows and deep channer running by the shore.

There is excellent fishing spots, though we we not so successfull with giants but we have got various speecies from the spot.
We have noticed tat fish activity drops very significantly before the storm, very productive spots just suddenly stop working.
We had an excellent lunch with fresh Mozambican King Prawns at Lucas restaurant at the local village.
And we are on our way home to Pretoria.

Dullstrom FlyFishing Clinique

So there is a fly shop in Cedar Square, Johanneburg called FlyFishers Unlimited.
In the last couple of years it has become all our flyfishing needs main point of contact.
This is where I go to bombard with all questions and problems I have collected between trips.
And they would listen and answer patiently.
This time we wanted some kind of flyfishing clinique to improve our skills.
We prefered Yellowfish, but it wasn't the best season for them, because the rivers were too high due to rains.
Murray came up with a proposal to go to Dullstrom for a stillwater trout clinique.
We agreed immidiately.
On Thursaday 24 Feb at half past four in the morning, we took off from Pretoria to Dullstrom with Murray as a captain.
Mavungana Syndicate Water is a big lake looking very nice.
Murray started to explain were should we start from and what rigs would he usually use first.
We have assembled three different setups.
Dragon and buzzer, dry/dropper and streamer and nymph on intermidiate line.
We started fishing I had no response on both static dragons and moving leach.
Ella had little response on dry/dropper as well, but as soon as they swiched to white streamer, and immidiate powerfull bite resulting in line break.
Next couple of casts brought the first fish.
i ave started to see bites on two small nymphs, while drifted below indicator. Taken two good fish.
We have tried to fish the washing line, but with little luck.
After lunch we were hoping for some surface activity and even tied some dries on one rod, but the weather was quickly changing.
There was no fish activity seen at all.
Thunderstorm with heavy rain have drawn a line below this day.
This day was proably the most productive ever, in the means of knowledge.
The atmosfere was great, and we enjoyed every minute of chating with Murray.
So lots of luck to FlyFishers Unlimited, so we could use their hospitality next times.

Local Rod Building.

This rod was built by Slava M., his first fly rod. He made several spinning rods before that. The rod is 8"00 4wt built on MHX blank.
I will jump ahead and say that I have tested the rod, it has very nice medium action, loads and casts very well the 5wt line. Very balanced rod, the handle is too short in my opinion. Excellent for a first fly rod to build.

This is a new format "Israfish" is trying, not the long 5 days match, but an 2 days, weekend one.
This one for a bit less fanatic carpfisherman, and a bit less strict rules.
This year it was better than ever, veri good mood, weather. Many people were interested, 38 teams participated.
Very good atmosphere, although I'm not fishing for carp for some yars, but alway attend this competition for a day or two, just to take pictures and stay with the teams for a little bit.

That morning I've started wading, catching some mix of small and largescale yellows on New Zealand rig, with Rhyacophilia Larva and PTN as a point fly.
Finally I got to a deep spot by the huge rock where good size fish was rising quite frequently.
First cast on a Elkhair Caddis brought me a smalscale as the fly touched the surface and no more action on that fly.
I have changed the fly to 18 or 20 size RAB, I bought in South Africa last year. At my second cast I had a very aggressive take and a my first descent largescale on dry fly is in the net, I caught some smaller ones later on.
At around 9:00 I decided it's time for coffee and breakfast, so back to the camp.
I have still a lot to learn about all around presentation of dries, there were loads of fish, but I've struggled to make them try my flies.

We found the place quite late in the morning, barbel were jumping all the time.

So we started to throw some flies, this time only smallscale barbel was taking, which is quite rare.

As usual at around 9:00 th water rises and we're on our way home...

So I just went to the reef to see what's up with those bream, I took an UL rod.

At one of the strong streams I tried the ZBL fakie dog for a couple of casts.

And here it is the summer bass,a small one, and so it's not over yet this year.

I found those sea bream later... though it was very hot already at 08:oo am.

So this time we already knew the place, the beach next to Tiberias is pretty free of people on the weekends, because of huge rocks by the water, and the place is very easy to find.

Friday evening all organization group started to arrive, as usual hoping to catch a couple of hours of sleep. And so in the morning everyone is here, registration and start at 6:00.

People got spread at 2 km of the allowed space, referees running up and down.

We already see that some guys are working on small fish, because every tail is a point or every 100gr is a point.

Though some others trying to go for something larger.

4 hours of fishing and its starting to become real hot when we hear the final serene at 10:00.

The winner a guy was fishing with fly caught around 120 tails.

So we decided on Cuba...

The intension was to see Cuba, not mainly fishing.

It was very windy on the north coast, not a chance to take a fly rod out.

So I've tried a lure, it was not much successful.

But when we got to Baracoa in river Toa I've caught my first Jack, and the next morning I found a group of small Snook.

The Carribean coast was better, lots of snappers and jacks.

The fishing is just amazing, no 100lb tarpon, and no bones for me.

But those jacks are lots of fun on a light tackle.

Found a group of mackerel one morning it attacked LC Sammy like mad.

I was not lucky to find a guide through local Hotels, and had no intension to pay a fortune to International operators.

I think if I would stay at one place for more than a day I could be much more successful.

But anyway Cuba is amazing.

We actually went for bass, and the sea was right according to all theory, and the place we could not ask for better. Even the tide was incoming.
But not a slight sign of bass in two hour, not in the outgoing streams nor in the sandbanks.
I've just tried to throw a ZB Riggie 46 MDR in between the rocks, and a bite staight away.
Second throw and second bite. So we changed to bream fishing, and it was as good as in summer.
Maybe bream season is all year round?..

This year again "Israfish" club organizes carpfishing competition, and I'm there again to take some pictures.

It was very successfull this year, no team stayed without fish at all. And the fight for winning places was really close up to the last hours. Carpfishing here is getting stronger every year and I think some of our local teams could already participate in an International event.

This weekend we went to find some big winter fish.
The sea was very quite and pretty low, it was Youri's second time lure fishing out, so I gave him my summer ultralight set. I have started with topwaters myself, this new toy by ZipBaits, Fakie dog 70 DS is just fantastic. This dog just walks itself. But that day there were no clients for my dog.
Youi cought the firs bream and I was sure that the crazy guy just doesn't know it's winter, but then came another guy and another... So I have switched to zome Zipbaits Riggie 40 MDR, this old guy started working immidiately bringing bream from every hole in the reef.
At least summer is still here, these breams are great fish...

Carp rods test

It is famous to believe among carpfisherman on less successfull days, that they are not getting to the fish. They believe that they need to cast just a bit farther...
And so they buy all those new extra distance rods that appeare lately on the market. On weekends their wives don't allow them to go fishing they go casting somewere closer to thir house.
Two of those crazy carpfisherman are very good friends of mine. I've bought a new superwide lens Canon EF-S 10-22 F3.5-4.5 and so it was my opportunity to test it past saturday.

This friday we've finally got to check the Jordan river stocks.

At the place we were supposed to wade, the water was too high and I even got a little water flown over in my waders.

We've seen no signs of fish at all this time.

It was strange, as usually it is the best season for our barbel this time of year.

Tho days later we went to check out some smaller stream in the north. It is heavilly used for irrigation and so the water is pretty low untill 9.00 am,and the flow is mild.

Lots of smalscale barbel taking zak nymph at the shallow places.

I have seen some biger ones at deeper places, but none of us did not manage to get hold of one untill the water had risen. And then it was just cut, not a single bite at all.

The weather acting strange this year, we had some rains in september which is very unusual, and the water is pretty high in the rivers. Maybe October will bring some bigger barbel.

Bat Yam walk

Bat Yam is a small city near Tel Aviv, the beach there has lots of rocks.
The place is very heavily fishing pressed, but on the weekends I'm on call I can't go any feathere that this.
The sea today was really high, waves hight did not suggest walking on the riffs, but I'v tried...
A good Locus below was my reword, and later I was washed off by a big wave, it was quite scary.
Dual Hardcore SH 50 was working just perfectly,very intensively playing in the rough sea.
It seems as a universal lure for different fish, the only place you can't use it is flats with depths of below half a meter.
So after all it was a succeffsull day out.

So we met at 4:50 at the northern entrance to Ashqelon.
The sea was just perfect, waves of about meter or a bit higher.
The water feels like tea, veery hot as it's always in the end of summer.
We were optimistic though usualy august is quite dead.
I got first bream off the rocks soon on Zipbaits Riggie 46s MDR.
We caught some more though no biger fish was seen.
It was a good start of this week.

Rough Day

We did not look at the weather report the evening before, otherwise we would stay home watching BassMaster...
We found ourselves at Michmoret beasch at around 5.00
setting up our ultraligt gear (we even were clever enough not to take a little heavier rods).
The sea was high and the western wind was strong, and we could only throw our lures, all with magnetic system, to no more than just in front of the reef. But usually it is enough for the bream, but at the beginning not even a sign of those guys.
After about an hour Shai takes his first bream.
And 15 minutes later he pickes up a tiny seabass on YoZuri SeaFox minnow 50mm.
I fished the shallower area picking up some tiny fishes, and a baby Seabream.
At the end of our 5 hour walk Shai catches a huge Bream.
And another one on his way back.
At around 11.00 we packing up because the heat is just enormous.
Ok I will meet my bream the next time ....maybe

We thought, we will never make it this year.
All busy with fresh and saltwater fly fishing. And saltwater plugging taking into account that I just got my new Tenryu rod from Japan...

But, anyway, somehow we decided to go.

A long drive at night, a little walk with seat box, holdall, groundbait bowl (full), and a small bag all on your back. Making groundbait at first... Ve-ery strong coffee with cardamon out of small glasses, just like it supposed to be here in the middle east.

And to the business...

First it is a real hell to setup your seatbox on those huge stones, but we're quite used to it.

Choose a rig, and you can roll your pole forth to plumb the depth.
Wow this year it's nearly three meters, good news!

Last year it was hardly over 2.5m.

I've decided to fish the 11.5m and a 5m kit on a very light float (0.4gr).
The depth at 5 meters is somewere at 5meters. 6 balls going on a long line and

only loose feed to the short one.

The short line started with sweet corn and works immidiately, bringing 3 small crucians.

The long line started working first for Steve with half a decent carp n corn as well.

I have swiched to carp as well.

Chopped worm did not work, I forgot my bread at home (as usual). And I did not realy have motivation to prepare paste or the meat. So we stayed with corn.

All of them were like brothers about 700grams each. We have not seen any grass carp or bigger carp this time.

Any way we had a great start this year, and I hope we will still have the power to make it a number of times this season and even maybe will take a part in matchfishing competition at the end of july.

Memories of South Africa

It's been a long time since my last visit to South Africa. It is probably the most beautifull place I have visited untill today.
My last visit was two years ago and I've been there for so many times and it is still always number one on my list and I can't wait to get there.
Another thing is looking at my last time visit photographs and I see all different ones from those I chose two years ago.
Looking at old raw images is like visiting the place for another time.
I hope South Africa does well in the future and i will visit it for another endless times.

Saltwater bream fishing.

Somehow only the float fisherman used to fish for bream, we sometimes heart that someone took it on lure, but it was concidered accidental. It was like that until Igi this guy from Haifa appeared somewere about two and a half years ago, an he wanted to explore the saltwater UL fishing. He had some success on spinners first, and then he tried small minnows, it worked even better and then he found an excellent Australian site: http://www.breammaster.com/
It was a breakthrough, following that summer he summarized all his knowledge in small article, in Russian of course... If someone interested it is still the best source for bream fis hing.
I was busy then setting up my fly fishing, but then I was invited to visit the best bream spot near Rosh Hanikra with someone who knew what to do. My goal that day was to catch a bream on fly. I tried Crazy Charlies, Clousers and a special weapon Green Polarflash Clouser and the fish has just ignored it. In that time Andrey was taking fish after fish showing me the spots were the fish is staying. I decided to switch to spinning and feel and find the fish myself. I chose Duel Hardcoe SH50 (my favourite now) , but that day I have seen no fish at all.
Some time later I went to different place alone, it is somewhere near Netaniya. Someone told me it was a realy interesting spot.
As i approached the nearest rocks on my third cast I had a bite and my very first sea bream was trying to eat my Hardcore.
Untill now thi place is one of my favourite in my bream fishing, though this fish has it's own moods and is never easy, yet I have never cought one on fly.
I have noticed that my best lures for bream are all vibrating and tried to tie something like a fly with a lip, and I even made a couple, but none of them would work like they supposed to.

Freshwater Lure Fishing Competition

This year I said that I'll take on myself the arrengement of the competition, the rules stayed the same, we found a long piece of coast with huge rocks all over the place, should be the best place for tilapia.
about 3 or 4 meters from the shore the bottom drops to about 3 meters.
We went to check if there's fish some two weeks before the competition. Some good barbel was taking big gold Kastmasters 7 and 10 grams. Tilapia was actively taking the topwater Towadi.
On the competition day we were already there and the people started to arrive at about 5:00 in the morning. After registration and small briefing everyone spread all along the coastline.
The referees were lucky not to break thier legs trying to run all along the coastline, watching that everything goes right.
The left side was working well and people were taking fish after fish, but in the middle and left guys stuggled for every single tail.
In the middle the leaders were already far enough to compete between themselves, not caring about the oters left behind.
Finally the last ring and everyone meets the referees at the center, final weighting the fish and it took some half an hour to count all the results.
Finaly the first place took over 50 tails.
This was uor second time and it went pretty well, will everyone enjoyed.
Will try and make it even better next year.

This years freshwater season started a bit late, somewhere in the middle of April.
The winter was warm but ended late, as usual Kinneret warm up first so we decided to give it a try.
Tilapia was a bit slow to wake up and we already thought that we would need to wait a week or two but then there were a first one on goldhead and we had some more on spinning using Smith Towadi. Only towards 10-11 in the morning the started to take the goldheads pretty confident.
